Rain, rain go away

Only last night I was speaking to my parents about the lack of rain recently, and I said I was sure I'd seen on the forecast that somewhere or other was supposed to get a month's worth of rain in one day.  Well Yorkshire certainly had some scary weather today.

After several heavy cloudbursts and thunder storms during the day, the rain stopped and we decided to quickly venture out for some supplies we needed.  We'd not gone more than four miles when the heavens opened again.  By the time we got to Featherstone, the roads were like rivers.  A bit further on in Pontefract, there were waterfalls tumbling off walls and storm drains were spurting water like fire hydrants.

Visibility was extremely poor and the wipers couldn't keep up with the sheer volume of water.

It felt like we were driving through a lake!

Coming along one road, down which the water was running like a river, something hit the car with a very loud bang.  We had no idea what it was, partly because we couldn't see much anyway and partly because whatever it was was totally under water.

It was only when we were coming back, and the water had subsided, that we were able to see what had hit the car.  The road had partially collapsed, washed away and buckled.

This was just one little back road.  I rather suspect Wakefield council will be having some rather large bills for road repairs, and for damage to vehicles, particularly as more of the same is forecast for Sunday.

I hope you are all safe and well, and haven't suffered any damage during the storms.

Until next time. x

  3. We had a very bad thunder storm in Doncaster too with lots of lightening. I was so glad we came home from Ripon with the caravan on Thursday night, it would have been terrible travelling down the A1 in that lot. Its raining again now! x
